Three Tips For Language Learners

I found a very good article on learning a language on Lexiophiles.com: www.lexiophiles.com: an interview with Spanish translator and TV show presenter Xosé Castro.

In my opinion, Xosé's three special tips for learners are really at the heart of learning a foreign language and having fun along the way. I am sure that my students will recognize this advice :)

1. Do not worry so much about your pronunciation

Really, the student's first goal is to communicate and you will only be able to do so by trying and by making mistakes. It is OK to make mistakes; everyone who speaks a foreign language fluently has made plenty of mistakes. They are part of the journey and can become funny stories to tell. My friend Tuca will never forget the first time that he was asked “What’s up?” He looked up and asked “Where?”

2. Learn everyday expressions

Obviously I hold colloquial language in very high regard. That is why we are called Street Smart Brazil :) When I studied English in Brazil, no one ever taught me how to say simple things like "What's up?" When I first got to the US, I spoke fluent English but sounded as if I had materialized out of a textbook. Well, textbooks are important, but when we step in a foreign country or find ourselves among international friends, colloquial language is the real thing. Street Smart Brazil students know that very well!

3. Learn all the time

Weekly lessons are a very important part of the journey, but are not enough. A student needs to learn everyday and in every way: do your homework, listen to music, watch videos, talk with native speakers with every opportunity. Spend some time every day practicing and learning.

Here are three easy ways to find videos in Brazilian Portuguese online:

  • Justin TV:  They stream live video including TV channels from around the world. I searched for "Rede Globo" and got to watch Lord of The Rings dubbed in Portuguese :)

It is worth reading the interview with Xosé Castro. Click here for the full article.

I am a international student here in UK and the kind of English I learned back home is really different. Here in UK the accent is also very much different and it is really very hard for me to establish with the local people. I now have the tips and idea from this post and will surely apply them. Since I am alone here in UK and I do not know many things about this place so I am thinking to get a Short Term Medical Insurance so I can be safe from my part. If tomorrow something happens then I will have face it all alone.

Not too long ago I visited Brazil, and I went into it thinking they spoke Spanish.....yikes! When I got there I was lost, and a lot of people were offended I didn't know a single word in Portuguese, except for si which means yes, and aki means here. It's a good thing I had my iphone, or I wouldn't have been able to order a cup of coffee, let alone a place to stay. This is the site I was able to find that helped me out. Not to mention I didn't have any travel health insurance, so if anything happened to me there, I would have been in some deep trouble. Thanks for allowing me to comunicate when I was ill prepared.

Don't feel bad, Thatcher554, many people think that we speak Spanish in Brazil. It's actually understandable since the other countries in South America speak Spanish or Castellano. Some words are similar in spelling but pronunciation and even the meaning are different.

I'm glad you got around well after all!  One great way of learning some street smart expressiosn is joining our group on Facebook, we have great cultural tips there too.

obrigada,

Great tips!
Thanks for the encouragement... It's very easy for me to get discouraged, I hate making mistakes!! But like you said, it's part of the journey!

In my opinion, students learn more when they try to say what they do not know how to say. Keeping on a safe path is not going to add much to what you already know :) Be daring and have fun with your mistakes.
