Everyone is super excited about the World Cup. I sure am! Tomorrow – Tuesday June 15 – is Brazil’s first game, at 11:30 am PDT, against North Korea. To get your Portuguese ready for the game, check out our video about soccer vocabulary.

I have put together a list of places that will be showing the games live here in San Francisco.

Please note: I cannot guarantee whether these places will show all the games and if they have space. Please call them directly for precise information.

The Brazilian Portuguese Speaking MeetUp Group has events planned for the Brazil games. You can check out their calendar here. The group is closed for the June 15 game – more than 50 people are confirmed for that meeting. It is a good idea to RSVP for the other events as early as possible.

Where to go in San Francisco to watch the games:

  • Pizza Orgasmica – They have three locations in San Francisco:
    823 Clement Street, San Francisco, CA‎ - (415) 386-6000‎
    2 Embarcadero Ctr # 1640, San Francisco, CA‎ - (415) 834-9600‎
    3157 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA‎ - (415) 931-5300‎
  • Martin Macks, 1568 Haight Street - San Francisco, CA 94117 - Tel: (415) 861-2236
  • Abbey Tavern, 4100 Geary Boulevard (@ 5th Ave.) - San Francisco, CA 94118 - Tel: (415) 221-7767

How to watch from your computer:

If you are stuck at home or in an office during the games, you may want to stream it online. Users with certain ISP's in the US can go to http://espn.go.com/espn3/index and stream it for free from ESPN3 (We've tested Comcast in San Francisco to work). You may even be able to choose Portuguese as the language of the game.

If that does not work, we recommend searching shortly before the game to try and find an "unofficial" stream. For tomorrow's game, for instance, you can search for "Brazil North Korea Stream".

If you have suggestions of other places and sites, please leave a comment.

Vai Brasil!

Pessoal!
Luciana explains that you can stream for free on ESPN3. You do not NEED Comcast, I can do this at work. We don't have Comcast, and I hope your network is fastner than ours!
Also, you can watch the games later, in the GameCast archive. Go to ESPN3, espn.go.com and find the game in the bar near the bottom of the web page. You will get to a page with some tabs, choose GAMECAST. Now look at the BLUE oval on the play bar that says WATCH NOW. You can also select the language. Select PORTUGUESE. These guys are so much better than the English-language clowns on ESPN. The PT commentators are speaking on a whole different higher level than what you'll hear in English on ESPN.
I am understanding more little by little. Study Lucianas's Blog on Vacabulario de Futebol, and learn memorize all of the soccer terms. You WILL begi to understand what the commentators in PT are saying. They do NOT talk that fast.
Also, you'll learn what your Brazilians are saying when they talk about futebol! The World Cup is so muh fun and it is a great learning experience for us!
