Street Smart Brazil brings you a Roda with which to learn Portuguese!

Roda is a circle. As a student of Brazilian Portuguese and someone who enjoys experiencing the Brazilian culture, you may be familiar with the concept of Roda de Samba – a group of musicians who sit in a circle to play and sing samba. Here in Brazil it is very common to see rodas de samba in bars, at a friend’s party, at the beach, or anywhere where friends can get together, share a beer or caipirinha, sing and dance together. 

Those who jogam capoeira know well how important the Roda de Capoeira is.

The circle symbol is universal. It means inclusion, wholeness, focus, unity. It is no surprise that social gatherings tend to spontaneously assume the form of a circle. Brazilians, being social and loving to communicate, enjoy their rodas, be it samba, choro, capoeira, you name it.

What is our Roda de Português?

It is a wonderful, dynamic group class where students practice lots of conversation and listening, exchange ideas and opinions, learn tons of colloquial vocabulary, talk about Brazilian culture, and enjoy the guidance of an excellent, professional Portuguese teacher.

Our Rodas de Português are small – maximum of six students – to ensure that you will have ample opportunity to participate and practice.

The focus of the class is you. We want you to practice casual conversations and express your opinions. We want you to feel comfortable speaking Portuguese in any situation or setting.

To accomplish this, each meeting happens around a certain theme. In our most recent session the group talked about family, travel, and health, among other topics. They practiced giving advices and suggestions, talking about the past and their memories from childhood and teenager years, and more. We prepare the class with three goals in mind:

1. You will practice verb conjugation – each class is designed to emphasize certain verb tenses
2. You will build relevant vocabulary – we pack each lesson with colloquial vocabulary and idiomatic expressions
3. You will develop fluency and listening skills – classes include audio and visual resources, and in each meeting we allot a generous portion of time for you to practice conversation.

We have a new Roda de Português session beginning January 11 with Street Smart Brazil founder and lead instructor Luciana Lage.

This particular Roda is better suit to intermediate to advanced students. Classes are conducted 100% in Portuguese, and we assume that you are already conversational.
