On May 13th, 1888, 123 years ago, slavery abolition was (finally) signed into law in Brazil.

Sadly, Brazil was the last nation in the Western world to abolish slavery.

In which ways does slavery still exist in Brazil and in the world?

Some related vocabulary:

  • slavery: escravidão / escravatura
  • abolition: abolição
  • slave: escravo / escrava
  • freedom: liberdade
  • slave work: trabalho escravo
  • Lei  Áurea: "Golden Law": law signed by Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil, legally abolishing slavery nationwide.
  • Princess Isabel: Princesa Isabel
