Viva São João !!!

As we speak, Brazil is full of bonfires, all kinds of corn dishes are being cooked, and everyone is getting ready to dance forró all night long!

São João (Saint John) is the saint honored on June 24th. The festival is native to Northeastern Brazil, but nowadays it is spread all over the country. It's also called "Festas Juninas" (literally 'parties of June') because the celebrations take place over the month of June, and also honor Santo Antonio and São Pedro.

Street Smart Brazil wanted you to get to know more about it! That is why teacher Renata Barboza-Murray and I decided to work on this together! Professora Renata did the transcription of this cool animation about São João do Nordeste (Saint John of the Northeast), and I got in charge of posting it here!

The video is super cute! The image ‘talks’ by itself, so it’s worth watching, even if you are not fluent and cannot understand the transcription. It travels the 9 states of Northeastern Brazil during the month of June showing how São João happens in each state and the particular dances & rythyms that each state is more famous for. On top of that, the video also shows the many similarities in the way in which the party is celebrated.

All the symbols of the São João festival show up on the video: bonfires, costumes, the traditional decoration (colored flags and São João baloons), the typical food, dance, music, etc.
