Flashcards (Now With Sound): Professions/Profissões – Learn How to Say Your Profession in Brazilian Portuguese
(Photo: Marta - Brazilian Soccer Player)
| - O que você faz? | “What do you do?” |
| - Eu sou professora. E você? | “I’m a teacher. And you?” |
| - Eu sou jogadora de futebol. |
“I’m a soccer player.” |
O que você faz? This is a common question you will hear in Brazil when people want to learn about your profession. Did you notice that we used the verb SER in the sentences above? Check out more examples:
| Eu sou diretor de marketing. |
I’m director of marketing. |
| Márcia é secretária. | Márcia is a secretary. |
| Você é medico? |
Are you a doctor? |
| Nós somos comissários de bordo. | We are flight attendants |
| Carlos e Henrique são atores. | Carlos and Henrique are actors. |
| Vocês são estudantes. | You are students. |
Note: We do not use the articles “um” or “uma” before the names of profession unless you are expressing a fact or giving your opinion about someone’s way of working.
| Ângela é uma ótima dentista. | Ângela is a great dentist. |
| José é um péssimo gerente. |
José is a terrible manager. |
| Gilberto Gil é um cantor muito famoso | Gilberto Gil is a very famous singer. |
To learn more professions vocabulary, check out my new set of flashcards below. Now you can also listen and practice the pronunciation of each word. We would like to thank Quizlet developers for working hard to make this happen.
Please, tell us o que você faz and I will be glad to add your profession to our list if it’s not there yet.
Tip to use these flashcards: To see the English word on one side and the Portuguese translation on the other, disable (uncheck) "Both Sides" on the top right of the cards. To listen to the pronunciation, click on the speaker icon on the top left of the cards to enable sound. Click to flip the card.
You can play games online with our flashcards. Visit Street Smart Brazil on Quizlet and choose any of our flashcard sets. Then choose a game under Play Games below the first flashcard. Divirta-se!

Time flies so fast. I am excited for World Cup and hoping to go there soon to have the time of my life. I need to sell these electric pallet jack models to save more money.
It seems like some exciting times ahead for Brazil and I'm hoping to come over and visit for the World Cup ... I'd like to think I will be able to speak a little bit of the language before I get there :)

Obrigada, J Francois Carle! Those were really good suggestions!
Luciana Lage
Our member J Francois Carle sent me a message asking for two words related to professions:
1. retired - aposentado/aposentada
2. unemployed - desempregado/desempregada.
One important note: we use the verb ESTAR when we say "I'm unemployed", since it is a (hopefully) temporary situation.
Ex.: Marcelo está desempregado. Marcelo is unemployed.
I have already added these two words to our set of flashcards.
Muito obrigada pelas sugestões, J Francois Carle!
