The Brazilian Food List that Killed my Salad

 --> Feijoada

It was lunch time and I was debating if I should have a salad or if I should enfiar o pé na jaca* and go put those frozen pãezinhos de queijo in the oven. I was about to get up and go make that salad when I came across a website about nothing more nothing less than Brazilian food.

FoodSpring is a website about the culture of food. They have a section on Brazilian food culture, including a nice list of traditional Brazilian dishes with a brief description of each. Some of my favorites are there: coxinha, empadinha, farofa, churros. How could I possibly get up and make that salad?

The site also mentions acarajé (which I am sure you already learned about from our book 51 Portuguese Idioms) and brigadeiro (which you know how to make from our step by step video on how to cook delicious brigadeiros).

Interesting food fact: Did you know that rice and beans are staples on the Brazilian table, especially for lunch? Yes, and I once learned from a professional nutritionist that rice and beans are a perfect combination: They complement each other in a very synergistic way and your body gets the most out of each one when they are together.

Also interesting: FoodSpring mentions cupuaçu as the new acaí. Cupuaçu is a fruit form the North of Brazil, and I love its juice.

Speaking of fruits, we have two great blog posts for you: one about Brazilian fruits that you must try and another with 35 flashcards with sound for you to learn how to ask for your favorite fruits by their names.

Back to my lunch dilemma, I am sure you will understand that my battle was instantly over. Maybe tomorrow I will have a salad. For now, excuse me, I have to go check on my pãozinho de queijo.

* Enfiar o pé na jaca = to get wasted, to eat more than you should, to commit an excess.
