Breakfast in Brazil - Vocabulary Flashcards with Sound

(Pic source)

I bet that you got hungry just by looking at the picture above. That is a typical breakfast buffet at hotels in Brazil.

Doctors say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We, Brazilians, agree. We do take our time to eat a rich café da manhã. READ MORE>

The Brazilian Food List that Killed my Salad

 --> Feijoada

It was lunch time and I was debating if I should have a salad or if I should enfiar o pé na jaca* and go put those frozen pãezinhos de queijo in the oven. I was about to get up and go make that salad when I came across a website about nothing more nothing less than Brazilian food.

FoodSpring is a website about the culture of food. They have a section on Brazilian food culture, including a nice list of traditional Brazilian dishes with a brief description of each. Some of my favorites are there: coxinha, empadinha, farofa, churros. How could I possibly get up and make that salad? READ MORE>

Hooked on Hygiene

(source)

Forget ‘Hooked on Phonics’. Either I never really knew it before or I had just forgot, but Brazil is hooked on hygiene (hey, it works for me!). Yes, that´s right. I know that to some, the word Brazil conjures up images of favelas and possible backdrops for children´s foundation infomercials (that open with “for less than a penny a day...”), but the reality is not so. Brazil On PBS: Black in Latin America with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

One of my favorite things about visiting Brazil is regarding the African influence on the culture. The food, the rythms, the dance the clothing, the lengends; it gives me a truly warm feeling inside. Coming from a Zimbabwean family, these aspects of Brazil bring back fond memories of my childhood experiencing those same things. READ MORE>

Spotlight: Samba Rock Açaí Cafe

A few weeks ago I went to Santa Cruz (California) for the beautiful wedding of my student Sarah. Carl and I were driving to our hotel when I spotted the familiar green and yellow colors. I basically yelled: "Eita, Brazilian place, I am hungry, stop the car!"

When Cooking, Remember to Convert

I love, love, love pãozinho de queijo. Pão de queijo, or cheese bread, is a favorite Brazilian snack: It is a small, soft roll made of manioc flour and cheese. If you have not tried it yet, please do!

The other day I got pão de queijo mix and came home super excited to bake my pãozinho. READ MORE>
