Hey guys, any recomendations for some MPB? I am really liking Vanessa da Mata's "Sim" but I'm having trouble finding anything else that is similar... I like it because it's got a little "Jack Johnson" feel to it.

She's got a bit of a different take on MPB, but I've been really fond of Cibelle recently.  She mainly sings old songs, but kind of ads a bit of a modern touch to them. You should check out her album "The Shine of Dried Electric Leaves"

I also got a new Ceu album when I was in Recife in September. It is called Vagarosa.  Some of it  is a bit on the reggae side to be called MPB,, but some of them are like Massive Attack meets MPB.  I dig it

Vanessa da Mata is awesome.
You can try Adriana Calcanhoto. The video below is old, but it is a very beautiful song. The lyrics are below:

Eu ando pelo mundo
Prestando atenção em cores
Que eu não sei o nome
Cores de Almodóvar
Cores de Frida Kahlo
Cores!
Passeio pelo escuro
Eu presto muita atenção
No que meu irmão ouve
E como uma segunda pele
Um calo, uma casca
Uma cápsula protetora
Ai, Eu quero chegar antes
Prá sinalizar
O estar de cada coisa
Filtrar seus graus...
Eu ando pelo mundo
Divertindo gente
Chorando ao telefone
E vendo doer a fome
Nos meninos que têm fome...
Pela janela do quarto
Pela janela do carro
Pela tela, pela janela
Quem é ela? Quem é ela?
Eu vejo tudo enquadrado
Remoto controle...
Eu ando pelo mundo
E os automóveis correm
Para quê?
As crianças correm
Para onde?
Transito entre dois lados
De um lado
Eu gosto de opostos
Exponho o meu modo
Me mostro
Eu canto para quem?
Pela janela do quarto
Pela janela do carro
Pela tela, pela janela
Quem é ela? Quem é ela?
Eu vejo tudo enquadrado
Remoto controle...
Eu ando pelo mundo
E meus amigos, cadê?
Minha alegria, meu cansaço
Meu amor cadê você?
Eu acordei
Não tem ninguém ao lado...
Pela janela do quarto
Pela janela do carro
Pela tela, pela janela
Quem é ela? Quem é ela?
Eu vejo tudo enquadrado
Remoto controle...
Eu ando pelo mundo
E meus amigos, cadê?
Minha alegria, meu cansaço
Meu amor cadê você?
Eu acordei
Não tem ninguém ao lado...
Pela janela do quarto

Pela janela do carro

Pela tela, pela janela

Quem é ela? Quem é ela?

Eu vejo tudo enquadrado

Remoto controle...

That was awesome.  You might want to also try Marisa Monte--her songs are mostly in a bit of an older (1980's/1990's) style, but she sometimes has a nice sort of quirkyness to her work.  This vid is not my favorite, but i randomly found it and thought it might be helpful for anyone trying to learn Portuguese b/c of the way the person made the video!

I like them all, especially Marisa Monte, and Adriana Calcanhoto.
I had heard also of Maria Gadú for a while, but only actually heard her the other day, and liked her voice and stilish presence.
Here is a video of her singing "Shimbalaiê":

I also thought of a really cool song that might help learn a little more Portuguese. Vanessa da Mata (of course) and Ben Harper with, Boa Sorte, they sing the same thing in their respective languages. Probably my favourite so far....

Obrigada, Species. Eu adoro essa música!! The first time I heard it, Carl and I were in Porto de Galinhas enjoying a gorgeous day at the beach. It was end of the afternoon and one of the barracas at the beach was playing it. It was one of those perfect moments :)

Here are the lyrics
Now everyone can sing along:)

Boa Sorte / Good Luck
Vanessa da Mata
Composição: Ben Harper / Vanessa da Mata

É só isso
Não tem mais jeito
Acabou, boa sorte

Não tenho o que dizer
São só palavras
E o que eu sinto
Não mudará

Tudo o que quer me dar
É demais
É pesado
Não há paz

Tudo o que quer de mim
Irreais
Expectativas
Desleais

That's it
There's no way
It's over, good luck

I've nothing left to say
It's only words
And what l feel
Won’t change

Tudo o que quer me dar / Everything you want to give me
É demais / It's too much
É pesado / It's heavy
Não há paz / There is no peace

Tudo o que quer de mim / All you want from me
Irreais / Isn't real
Expectativas / Expectations
Desleais

Mesmo se segure
Quero que se cure
Dessa pessoa
Que o aconselha

Há um desencontro
Veja por esse ponto
Há tantas pessoas especiais

Now even if you hold yourself
I want you to get cured
From this person
Who advises you

There is a disconnection
See through this point of view
There are so many special
People in the world
So many special
People in the world
In the world
All you want
All you want

Tudo o que quer me dar / Everything you want to give me
É demais / It's too much
É pesado / It's heavy
Não há paz / There's no peace

Tudo o que quer de mim / All you want from me
Irreais / Isn't real
Expectativas / That expectations
Desleais

Now we're falling
Falling, falling
Falling into the night
Into the night
Falling, falling, falling
Falling into the night

Now we're falling
Falling, falling
Falling into the night
Into the night
Falling, falling, falling
Falling into the night

Hey I just discovered how good www.last.fm is! you type in an artist and it plays that artist as well as a bunch of others of similar style. It's helped me discover a lot of cool music I would not know how to find! On top of this when going through my Por/Eng dictionary it referenced a musical style called Choro which I have come to love.... I found Paulinho da Viola recently and thought I would put a couple of youtube vids up that I'd like to share. I was going to make a Choro thread but these are a little more like MPB

This one might be a little closer to a certain Professora

and this one seems to be very popular.... it's probably my favourite.

Awesome.  There is also http://pandora.com, which does a very similar thing, and I really like the interface (and the fact that it is now available on my blackberry and my roku box).  I've also heard of http://slacker.com which apparently also finds similar music to the song you choose, but I haven't tried it yet.

I use last.fm because it's hooked up with my xbox live account and I use the xbox interface which is pretty good as well. But thanks, I might use pandora.com when I'm on my laptop.

This artist isn't Brazilian (she is Cape Verdean but from Portugal), but she combines many different styles of music - including Brazilian genres. You can't help but fall in love with her music.

Here's another good one:

Oi Species

Choro is awesome! When we were in Recife in September/09, we filmed a roda de choro there. My friend's boyfriend plays the 7-chord guitar that is typical of choro. Unfortunately, our camera was very bad and because the show was at night the image was too bad for me to post it.

Paulinho da Viola made me homesick. My mom loves him! Obrigada pela música que fala em Recife :)
I have a student and forum member who plays choro. I would love to see a thread on this beautiful rhythm. If you find cool videos, please share it with us!

I found I really like Ivan Lins, my friend brought back a DVD of his from Brazil, Saudades de casa. Unfortunately in my quick search I couldn't find any really good videos on youtube, a few with decent audio and pictures but I love the DVD. If anyone finds any decent vids I would love it if you could put them up here!
Valeu

@Species - Off-topic, but I recently swapped my wii for a 360 and I'm trying out last.fm on it now.  The music selection is bang-on and it is pretty cool to have the picture slideshow of the currently-playing artist.  good suggestion

@ Carl, that's cool man.... I found it was good, although leave it long enough and you will get some off genre stuff... I had it on the Choro tag for so long I was getting European orchestral... but I think it was because of the Brazilian Composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos (i think that's how it's spelled) which eventually crossed it over.
Back on topic... I definately want to see a live concert while I am in Brazil..  has anyone seen some artists that are great live?
Exaltasamba is on the cards as I will be staying in Sao Paulo... I could always go to their club. But I was hoping for some big event as well. Suggestions?

I love Marisa Monte live. She is fantastic on stage.

O Rapa is great, too; on of my favorites. They play pop rock/raggaeish. The concert has a lot of energy.

There are some very popular, old school artists who always put on a beautiful show, like Maria Betânia, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and many others.

There is always something (or many things) happening in Rio and São Paulo. If you are going there, you will certainly have the chance to see a good show. If you go to the North or Northeast, then it will depend on your trip coinciding with a national tour.
