I think we should take advantage of this space to get to know better the several travel destinations in Brazil.
I know everybody have heard of Rio, Sao Paulo, and the Amazon forest region. Not that these are less interesting (if you ever go to Brazil, you CANNOT miss them!), But, it always felt unfair that Brazil used to get reduced to 3 places, when we know of its enormous and infinite possibilities.
When I first moved to the US, I had to literally spell the name of my city, R E C I F E !! When this wouldn't work... I'd locate it geografically, and even say it is located in the same region of Salvador, in Bahia which was a little bit more known! But many times not even that would work...and i had to just say it was on the same coast as Rio but more up north...
Now it's all changed! I get proud and amazed that not only people know the name and pronunciation of Recife, but many many times have already been there!
Brazil is one of those few places in the world that after you go there once, you cannot accept that you will never go back.... you will actually automatically plan many other trips back. I say that not because I am Brazilian, but because I have seen it happennig many times with my American friends. (one even moved there for good!)
There is a variety of amazing places to go to in Brazil that will please from the most regular to the most exquisite taste. It's just a matter of getting to know where to go!
So... I propose this forum as a BRAZIL TRAVEL DIARY ...  so more and more people have access to travel destinations in Brazil.

  • Let us know of your latest trip to Brazil, where did you go, what was your experience like?
  • Or tell us about the trip you are planning.
  • Publish links to sites of those Brazilian destinations... pass along your learned tips...
  • If you wish...  publish your amazing pictures of Brazil, and tell us the story behind them.

Ok... I will start simple.... this link is from wikipedia... on RECIFE...for obvious reasons... I am from Recife.
So... check it out, and find out why Recife is know as the Brazilian Venice!
(But I will come back with other destinations in Brazil.)

I am curious to read about yours!

Pictures of Recife?  Oh I have some :)  Check out my 2008 and 2009 galleries!  Below are some hilites . . .

This is why they call it "The Venice of the Americas"

The Nordestino style of graffiti is pretty unique, and integrates cultural elements

Recife Antigo is full of once-magestic but now completely dilapidated buildings. It is a photographer's dream!

Many of them are remnants from when the Dutch were settled in "New Amsterdam" before being kicked out and later settling in what is now New York.  Some places could be a movie set for a post-apocalyptic Amsterdam!

Is this Venice-like enough for you?

One of my fave images of Recife is the shadows of the skyscrapers along the beach in the afternoon

Samba on the street at night in Recife Antigo is a must-see

Also if you are in Recife, don't miss the Brennand museums. The Brennands are two extremely rich brothers (who apparently hate each other).  One has a "castle" full of priceless works of art and antique weaponry. The other, my favorite of the two, makes amazingly cool works of art out of ceramics. His museum is the remains of his family's old ceramics factory converted into a wonderland of his subconcious. You can spend countless hours wandering around this place just taking in the detail of the striking murals and statues he has created here. It is absolutely worth the drive.

I often get the question if Recife is a big city. Yes, it is. The city of Recife has about 1,500,000 inhabitants. The Metropolitan Area of Recife has almost 4 million people spread over 15 cities. Pretty big, I would say :)
