O Natal
These last few days I have been putting together some very Australian food for our Christmas festivities and I thought it would be great to find out what are some bem brasileira meals that you would serve for this special day. I could guess it wouldn't be too far from what I am use to, being from the southern hemisphere as well. I am now on my 3rd Christmas in America and I am missing the heat, the cricket (it's a sport) and the abundance of seafood we have on Christmas day, Shrimp, oysters, scallops and more. I'm definitely interested in all the food you guys must spend a few days preparing for this special day.
Wow, ok... that was not what I was expecting.... Never really had turkey until I came here, Aussies don't really like it much, but Americans do a good job of it! Do you cook/serve it in the same fashion as they do here or you have your own style?
Merry Christmas and a Bonza (great) New year to you too mate.
I was surprised with your Ceia de Natal, too! It sounds fantastic with all the seafood! I wonder why we do not do that in cities like Recife, since they are so rich in seafood.
We cook the turkey like they do here, but as far as I know we do not have the same kind of stuffing and we do not use cranberry sauce.
We always have farofa with our turkey! Hmmm, I love farofa :) We also have potatoes or rice.
Ceia de Natal in my home
Ok... I will tell you guys what goes on the table at the Ceia de Natal in my house in Recife:
- Turkey (just like Luciana said, the stuffing is farofa...or some times there is no stuffing, and the farofa is served as a side dish. yeah...there is ALWAYS farofa !)
- nuts nuts, nuts (nozes, castanhas)
- there is always plenty of grapes on the table. My family (and I believe many others do the same) has the 'tradition', not to say 'superstition' of eating 12 grapes at midnight...one grape for each month of the new year...it is said it brings good luck (?). As I don't like grapes, my mom always had passas (raisins) as well...I'd eat them instead of grapes. :) . The Christmas party in my house is always huge, at least 50 people, since I have 10 uncles and aunts + all have at least 2-4 kids...+ close friends...So you imagine what I mean by having lots and lots of grapes on the table!
- We always have FATIAS DOURADAS for dessert (that's how we call them in my house... also known as RABANADAS or FATIAS PARIDAS. They are our version of French toasts...but after frying them, we pass them on a mix of sugar and cinnamon. hummmm...my mouth is watering!
- Oven cooked Ham - It is served as the second main dish after the turkey in my home.
- Champagne for the midnight toast (but I guess that is universal)
- All yummy Brazilian appetizers are a MUST as well: coxinhas de galinha, empadinhas de camarao, canudinho, brigadeiro, cachorro-quente, mousse de maracuja, beijo, etc etc etc... (I guess they'd deserve a post on their own!)
- And of course... there is always the 'drinking table' that is composed of all necessary items to keep the energy high all night long for the FREVO, SAMBA, and FORRO that we will be dancing to. To name a few: Cachaca for caipirinhas, vodkas for caipirioskas, fruits, fruits, and all kinds of fruits so you can make your own CAIPIFRUTA, beers, etc...
-the party is only over after the sun is up and hot...so we are sure the new year is a fact!
I hope you guys enjoy!
Vanessa
Vanessa, stop it right now! That is too much torture! I love everything you mentioned in your post :) That really is a great party.
Thanks Vanessa that's awesome!
Apart from the seafood we have, everything else seems very similar to what I'm used to. Especially the fruit! My state is well known for it's 'stone' fruit. Of course there is plenty of Alcohol back home, Australia is the 3rd highest consumer of beer (per capita) in the world. Although I'm not a drinker myself......
And I love farofa too! Oh man that stuff changed my life! haha
Oh and about your 'french toast' I was under the impression it was made of fried bread dipped in egg and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon anyway... have i been mistaken all this time??? personally I forgo those last two and put salt and pepper instead.
Anything else I should know?

This is a great topic, thanks for starting it. You might be surprised: the main dish in Brazil during Natal is turkey. Families and friends get together -- usually on the night of the 24th -- for the ceia de Natal.
We also eat lots of cheese and nuts. There is a Portuguese cheese called Queijo do Reino that is very popular during Christmas and New Year's festivities. It is delicious! As for nuts, lots of walnuts (nozes) and Brazil nuts (castanha do Pará).
I am curious to see what other Brazilians have to say.
Feliz Natal, amigo!
