Sad news: two tourists drowned in Aracaju - what we can learn from this
Aracaju (pronounced ah-rah-ka-zju, with emphasis on the last syllable) is the capital of the state of Sergipe in northeastern Brazil. It is a small city with a population of about half a million people.
I just read that two members of a UK rock band that was touring Brazil drowned in a deserted beach in Aracaju. Very sad. The reason I bring this to your attention is because I worry about things like that. We do not know what we do not know. If you are in Brazil and are not sure whether it is safe to walk around at night, please do not go out on your own. Ask the local population if it is safe to do so. If you do not know if it is safe to swim in the ocean, please do not swim too far from the beach. In Recife, for example, we have a huge problem with sharks. Swimming is prohibited in the city. People still bath there, but when the tide is high they stay in very shallow waters. When I lived there I often saw tourists going deep in the ocean for a swim. It is very tempting: the sun is extremely hot; the water is clean and has the perfect temperature for a gorgeous swim. If you do not know about the sharks and did not notice one of the very few signs about it, you will probably go into the water without any concerns. In Praia da Pipa, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, tourists have also drowned. The place is almost paradise, but the ocean can be very wild at some spots. People bath in the shallow waters, but when the tide is high only the surfers venture in.
I feel for those young artists and their families. I know that accidents happen and we cannot avoid or predict certain things. With this post I do not intend to say that they were careless or anything like that. I often talk about safety with my students and I felt that I needed to write this piece.

I should also add, that being from the UK it is very likely that they were weak swimmers, increasing their chances of finding trouble. Because of the climate they are from it is a common stereo type for tourists from the UK to get: badly sunburned and finding themselves in need of rescuing on beaches back home. While my aim is not to lessen the impact of this tradgedy but more so to indicate a contributing factor to the outcome. As a kid I was trained to be able to read the waves and conditions of the surf BEFORE going in, but that is our culture. Unfortunately for me this sounds like something I would do as I play in a rock band and would definitely want to go swimming in a secluded location should we tour Brazil sometime :-( Thanks for the warning!
