It is very difficult to learn these expressions just by memorizing them.
 
With my students, I prepare handouts with a number of expressions (not many at a time); for each expression I create a few situational examples and include a picture that can serve as a visual reference. In class, I create more examples and the student creates his/her own real life examples.
 
I recommend that you do something like this. Choose the expression of the day, search for it online and see what comes up. Ask friends to help you understand that expression in real life situations. Then stick to those words for a few days to practice it.

I'm just compiling a bunch of stuff for me to look at while the band is on tour... I'm not going to have much internet during June and July. So I need something to study while I'm away!

Um bom lugar para pegar expressões informais é o fórum do site www.englishexperts.com. É um site parecido com esse aqui, mas para brasileiros q estão aprendendo inglês. Tem um fórum de "como se diz" onde encontrará muitas conversas sobre expressões informais traduzidas entre o português e o inglês. Também tem um buletin toda mês que junta postes uteis num e-mail. Vale dar uma olhada nessa site, especialmente pra quem tem nível de português intermediado ou melhor, pois o site fica tudo no português.
