Elementary School Massacre
I am at a loss for words regarding the tragic happenings in Rio de Janiero. I've been watching Globo all day following the coverage of this story. Although based on my level of comprehension I haven't understood everything but unfortunately, based on what has gone on here in the United States, the story is all too familiar.
Being American, it is a sad fact that shootings like this at school, colleges, workplaces and othe public venues are relatively common occurances in the USA these days. My wife, who is from Recife, Pernambuco believes nothing like this has occurred in Brazil. What do you think? Is it simply the act of a disturbed person that can happen anywhere or is there a cultural shift in Brasil?
One newspaper in Brazil had the headline: "Eleven killed, 190 million wounded." So true.

Jimmy,
Thank you for your insight. All Brazilians around the world feel just like you. And yes, your wife is right: this is the very first time of such kind of massacre (= chacina) in a school environment. Unfortunately, we did have some other famous "chacinas" before, namely chacina da Candelária (Rio de Janeiro) and Chacina do Carandiru (São Paulo). However, the chacina do Realengo is the most shocking by far.
I do hope this is the first and last one. Don't really think that is a cultural shift in Brazil, but only time will prove it.
Brazilian president, Mrs. Dilma Roussef, has declared a 3-day national mourning (= luto) over this tragedy.
Our hearts go out to all the families and friends of the victims.
