Does anybody know what the most reliable and least expensive way of communicating between Brazil and USA is? I know about SKYPE- and that a laptop and internet access may not always be available in an emergency situation. I have heard of an unblocked phone that uses two sim cards- one for the US and one for Brazil. Does this work? And which is the best phone to use? My daughter is going to live in Rio for 6 months and she needs to have a phone that works!! I live in the US, but will be going down with her to help her get settled in 3 weeks.

Thank you,

Cheryl

Obrigada,

Cheryl

 Oi Cheryl,

I have been talking to some people and got two suggestions for you:

Calls to Brazil from the US:

1. MetroPCS - This company offers unlimited international calls to Brazil for $10 a month and there's no annual contract, you can stop the service as soon as your daughter is back from Brazil.

Calls from Brazil:

2. From what I heard the most reliable phone companies in Rio de Janeiro are TIM and  ViVo. So you can buy the prepaid card (for as low as 10 reais), register the account and that's it. I would also suggest that before make your choice, try to talk to some people that live in the area where your daughter will stay about the best phone company so that you can make your choice.

3. Whenever I go to Brazil and need to make phone calls to the US I use Magic Jack, but for this one you do need to have a reliable internet connection.

obrigada,

 Thank you Renata!

I have heard of MetroPCS for here in the US, but did not know about the ability to make international calls for only $10 per month!! This seems like the best deal for us here in the States, to call her while she is there.  I will investigate to see if there is a charge on the other (Brazil) receiving phone. This sounds way better than what At&t was offering- 3.99 per month for the international connection with .36 cents per minute for every call!

I have also been looking into Magic Jack for her to use to call us while she is  there. She may not have WiFi at the host house, so it depends greatly on that- since walking around Rio with a laptop, to an internet cafe, for instance,  is not really recommended. This is the same dilema that we are having with SKYPE.

Thank you for helping!

My pleasure, Cheryl. I do hope that the Metro PCS can help you to keep in touch with you daughter!

Enjoy your trip to Brazil!
