I bought a movie, Maos Talentosas, at my local Brazilian grocery. My intent was to write out the transcript in both English and Portuguese and watch it, listening for the Portuguese. Eventually not using the transcript at all, once I developed an ear for the words.

The problem I have is that the Portuguese subtitles are WAY off from the actual Portuguese words. For instance, on the subtitles, it says "

Está bem. Assim que eu terminar." However, the words that are spoken are "Tudo bem, e terminar aqui."

So, I guess I should have bought a Brazilian movie that has Portuguese and English subtitles, and perhaps that would be more precise. I spent a good amount of money on this movie... and can't keep buying them until I find one that works.

I was hoping to get a good recommendation from someone on here as to which movie I should try next.

 Olá Marked-Healed,

I am sorry to know that you didn't have a good experience with this movie but don't give up. The strategy you planned to work with it is very good and you can apply it to any other movie. :)

Translating a movie or a novel is a big challenge for a translator, so you will probably find some gaps between the texts in the original language and the one in the target language.

My suggestion is to keep watching the movie you have and to look for other differences since this will also help you to focus on the spoken and written languages, and consequently will help you improve your skills in the Portuguese language.

Then,  you can try to find some of your favorite movies on Youtube (It's free and it has a great collection of the most popular movies in the world dubbed in Portuguese). My favorite is "A procura da Felicidade" (The Pursuit of Happiness).  and you will find it split in several parts which is actually good because you can focus on understanding that specific part before jumping to the next one.

Amazon.com also has some movies dubbed in Portuguese and possibly with Portuguese subtitles. You will probably find good prices there.

Here's a list of some Brazilian movies that you can find on Amazon:

  1. Deus é Brasileiro (God is Brazilian)
  2. Se eu fosse você (If I were you)
  3. Se eu fosse você 2 (If I were you - part 2)
  4. Caminho das nuvens (The middle of the world)
  5. Central do Brasil (Central Station)

You will find many other titles as you search for "Brazilian Movies"! :)

divirta-se! (Have fun)

Great suggestions, Renata!
Here are two other movies that can be found on Youtube:
1. O Homem que Copiava = The Man Who Copied. It is on Youtube in several parts. I didn't find one with subtitles, but there might be one out there. The movie is also on Netflix.

2. Carandiru, based on a true story. I found it with English subtitles on Youtube.
Enjoy!
